Schlage Connect Smart Deadbolt Review

Today we will share our detailed review with you about Schlage Connect Smart Deadbolt. This smart lock is very popular and it deserves this. It has built-in alarm and many connection options to smart hubs by Z-Wave Plus so you can also have remote access to Schlage Connect Smart Deadbolt. You can also control this lock with Alexa And Google Assistant which turns this lock into a very attractive one.

Please note that this smart lock does not have it’s own Schlage connect app for Android or iOS so you will use your home automation system’s app to control it. Let’s start our review. Hope you will enjoy it.

Connection Standards and Smart Home Controller Options

schlage connect Smart Deadbolt

Schlage Connect Smart Deadbolt has many smart connection options including Alexa by Amazon Echo or Echo Dot, Google Assistant by Google Home, Ring Alarm System, Nexia, Wink but unfortunately it does not supoort Apple HomeKit. If you need something working with Apple HomeKit then you can have a look at Schlage Sense Smart Deadbolt.

As you may remember from our Schlage Encode Smart WiFi Deadbolt review, it was compatible with neither SmartThings nor Apple HomeKit but this one is compatible with SmartThings and it is very easy to connect Schlage lock to Smartthings. Now we will explain you all of the smart home automation systems that work with this smart lock.

Google Home Schlage Connect

Google Assistant is working very well with Schlage Connect Smart Deadbolt by Google Home Schlage Connect integration. You should have a Nexia Z-Wave Bridge, Nest Connect, Ring Alarm System or Wink to pair them. Only the disadvantage is, it does not support unlocking by your voice. If voice unlocking is very important for you then you should focus on Alexa option. Each of these smart hubs require very easy process to pair with your Schlage Connect Smart Deadbolt. We will not share them here because you can follow the steps on the apps without any problems.

Some of the voice commands are:

“Hey Google, I’m leaving” for locking

“Hey Google, lock the front door” for locking

“Hey Google, is the front door locked?” to check if door is locked

Amazon Alexa

Another option is Alexa by Echo or Echo Dot. If you already have one of these then you should also purchase one of the hubs we stated above control your Schlage Connect Smart Deadbolt by voice. You can lock/unlock the door and check if your door is locked by Alexa with voice commands. Alexa is working perfectly well with this smart lock. You should add skills of the hub you own to Alexa. Here is easy step by step:

1. Open the Amazon Alexa app and tap the menu icon

2. Tap on “Smart Home” and scroll down till you see “Get More Smart Home Skills” and tap on it

3. Scroll down and find your smart hub on the list and add it

To add Schlage Connect Smart Deadbolt to Alexa:

1. Open the Amazon Alexa app and tap the menu icon

2. Tap on “Smart Home” and scroll down till you see “Discover devices” and tap on it

3. Allow the app to find and discover connected devices that use voice commands

4. Tap on Schlage Connect Smart Deadbolt on the list

5. Final step, you should give a name to your Schlage Connect Smart Deadbolt on Amazon Alexa app. This is very important because you will include the device name at your voice commands every time so Alexa will understand the correct device and apply the operation you asked for. Tap on “Edit” button at the upper right and then on “Edit Name” and write your desired name.

Here are some examples for voice commands with the name of the device “Home”:

Home:
“Alexa, lock Home.”
“Alexa, unlock Home.”
“Alexa, is Home locked?”

Note: Alexa will always ask for the pin to unlock your door. Unlock feature is disabled by default so you should enable it and set a pin.

Auto Lock

Schlage Connect Smart Deadbolt has auto lock feature as the other competitors on the market. Auto lock used to lock your door automatically after a period of defined time passes over the unlocking. Auto lock timer cam be set to 30 seconds and you can do this over the lock easily. Product does not have auto unlock feature. If you need this feature you can have a look at our August Smart Lock Pro 3rd Gen review.

Keypad of Schlage Connect Smart Deadbolt

This smart lock has fingerprint-resistant touchscreen keypad and can store up to 30 codes with option of 4-8 digits at the same time. It is set to 4 digits as default. These codes can be generated with your smart home controller’s app or manually over the keypad. Your programming code is at the back of the box or at the back of the inside unit. There are 2 codes (4 digit) pre-defined for your usage. You can also find these at the same places.

It lights up when you press the Schlage logo so you won’t have any problems at the dark. Numbers can easily be seen even under the direct sunlight so we loved this design. While you are leaving the house if you press the Schlage logo, it will lock your door.

User Codes

You can’t create code types as one time, temporary and recurring. If you create a code it will work till you delete it. You can track the codes over the app but can not set them auto deleting functions. You should follow them and delete manually over the app. It does not have one time code too. If you are going to use Schlage Connect Smart Deadbolt for Airbnb then this can not be your first choice. We can not suggest you this smart lock for Airbnb or one time code. You can have a look at Schlage Encode Smart WiFi Deadbolt or August Smart Lock Pro 3rd Gen. Here you can find user manual.

Battery Life of Schlage Connect Smart Deadbolt

Schlage Connect Smart Deadbolt needs 4 x AA Alkaline batteries to operate. They are included in the package. Rechargable batteries would be a good option but not a must for this smart lock. It is almost impossible to give exact battery life for these kind of products. Many factors including situation of the door, weather, daily usage frequency can make huge differences. You can easily achieve 1 year of usage with daily 5-7 operations under ideal conditions.

Battery changing is a simple process for Schlage Connect Smart Deadbolt. You will just slide up the cover of interior unit and then unplug the cable on the battery holder and slide up the battery holder. Changing batteries is simple as this and finishes under 1 minute.

We will suggest you to buy Duracell Coppertop batteries for long performance. Batteries coming inside the box are generally finishing in 1-2 weeks so be careful about it. It has low battery indicator so whenever your battery goes down to 4.7v it will start blinking orange on keypad with a noise when you input a code. When the batteries are critically low you will see a red x blinking 3 times on the keypad with a warning tone after you press the Schlage button. You should change the batteries immediately. You can follow your battery over your app too. Even if you forget to change the batteries you can still unlock the door by your key.

We did not need any of these except Screwdriver. No drilling required too. It is definetely easy to install Schlage Connect Smart Deadbolt on your door. Whole process will finish around maximum 30 minutes including the configuration. You can find installation manual at here. Also you can watch the video below.
